Planet Lighting and Synapse Power Sustainable Salmon Farming in British Columbia

Discover how Planet Lighting, Cermaq, and Synapse Wireless are transforming salmon aquaculture with marine-grade LED lighting and wireless controls that improve fish health, reduce energy use, and support sustainable farming across Vancouver Island.

British Columbia is the fourth-largest salmon producer globally. Cermaq, a leader in the region's salmon aquaculture, partnered with Planet Lighting to implement a new sustainable aquaculture strategy. Planet Lighting then collaborated with Synapse to create an innovative, wirelessly controlled lighting solution. This system offered advanced beam control, energy efficiency, dimming capabilities, and performance monitoring, all tailored for aquaculture.

Over the past three seasons, Planet Lighting helped Cermaq upgrade to cutting-edge lighting in the Tofino region. This included installing Focus sea cage lights, a system designed to improve fish health and farm efficiency. Focus lights use downwelling technology to reduce sea lice exposure and optimize light for salmon. This not only boosts aquaculture outcomes but also significantly cuts energy use compared to old lighting.

Using high-efficiency LED lighting is a major step forward for regional salmon aquaculture. The energy savings align with Cermaq's sustainability goals, showing their commitment to eco-friendly practices.
In this successful Canadian collaboration, Powerserve and Planet Lighting provided custom electrical solutions, lighting expertise, installation, and ongoing support for Cermaq's lighting upgrade. With over 15 farms around Vancouver Island, Cermaq is a key player in British Columbia's salmon industry, setting a standard for sustainable production.

The marine-grade Focus luminaires, with Synapse's wireless control, offer a compact, user-friendly solution producing up to 70,000 lumens. The wireless design is safer for divers by eliminating cables and is durable in harsh marine environments. By mimicking natural light, Focus luminaires improve fish health and productivity, paving the way for sustainable salmon farming in British Columbia.
